Step-by-Step Directions
Cut tree shapes out of your bread using a tree-shaped cookie cutter. If you don’t have a cookie cutter, you can cut free-form tree shapes by hand instead.
Grease an 8- or 9-inch cast iron pan, or any similarly sized round baking dish.
Arrange the cut bread trees standing up in the pan, leaving a small overlap between each piece to form your forest layout.
In a mixing bowl, beat eggs, milk, jam, sugar and cinnamon together until the mixture is smooth and fully combined.
Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread, making sure to soak both the tips and the bases of the tree-shaped bread pieces.
Chill the assembled casserole in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or overnight. This rest step ensures the bread fully absorbs all of the egg mixture.
When you are ready to bake, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Once baked, dust the casserole with powdered sugar and serve warm, topped with fresh fruit, maple syrup, butter, or any other of your favorite toppings.
Community Reviews & Questions
⭐ loved it
This looks and sounds amazing, but it seems you’re missing a key step: how long do you bake the casserole for? I’d love to make it this weekend — it’s perfect for our current snowy, cold weather — but I don’t want to undercook or overcook it.
Multiple community members have followed up to ask for baking time clarification:
At the top of the recipe it says total ready time is 2 hours 30 minutes. Since 2 hours of that is refrigeration, I’m guessing the baking time is around 30 minutes.
How long do you bake it at 375°F?
Connie: The recipe for Christmas Trees French Toast Casserole says to preheat the oven to 375 degrees… but for how long?
